  - Search Engines are the Wild Card on the Internet -
If you play that card ingeniously you might
make that "mysterious transition" to a
... HIGH TRAFFIC WEB SITE ...

SPECIAL TIPS FOR HIGH TRAFFIC - HERE

TITLE - DESCRIPTION - KEYWORDS - DO  THESE  FIRST

The TITLE and DESCRIPTION are the most important words
when dealing with search engines.

Keep the TITLE brief - 8 to 10 words
This is the base for all that follows.

The DESCRIPTION should be no more than a sentence or two - preferably under 25 words. State the main offerings of your service or product.

The KEYWORDS are the "catch all" to be sure the UNIQUE FEATURES of YOUR SITE are listed. The MOST IMPORTANT KEYWORD or KEYWORD PHRASE should be used in your title and description. More than THREE repetitions of keywords (in the keyword meta tag) should be avoided.
[ Such as - wooden cabinets, oak wooden cabinets, pine wooden cabinets, walnut wooden cabinets - - - You should list it as - wooden cabinets, oak, pine, walnut ]

AVOID LISTING EVERY POSSIBLE KEYWORD THAT RELATES TO YOUR SITE. In the early days of the internet it was common practice to have a HUGE list of keywords but that is no longer advantageous. FOCUS on a primary keyword or keyword phrase OR TWO. This primary keyword should be repeated AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE in the main TEXT OF YOUR HOMEPAGE. Also use the primary keywords in the ALT TAGS of your IMAGE FILE TAGS as well as in HEADLINE TAGS [ <H1> etc. ].
The TITLE of every page is visible at the top left of most browsers but the DESCRIPTION and KEYWORDS are invisible when viewing a web page and can be seen by VIEWING THE PAGE SOURCE.

WIDE  VARIETY  OF  SEARCH  ENGINES
There are hundreds of search engines and databases which can be searched but most of them are generally useless to the average internet commercial entrepreneur with a somewhat specialized trade. The promotion agencies that offer 300 ENGINES FOR $30 usually do just that but just remember that many of these registrations will never generate traffic for you.
You don't sell too many 'hand knitted silk mittens'
in the 'Oceanic Fishery Accessories Database'.

HIGH  TRAFFIC  ENGINES  ARE  HIGH  PRIORITY
Concentrate first on the MAJOR TRAFFIC ENGINES.
If you are wise you will try your hand at
registering your site YOURSELF.

START with   Google

... ONCE YOUR SITE HAS BEEN REGISTERED ...

THE EASIEST WAY TO CHECK YOUR LISTING IS
SEARCH FOR ...

YOUR   WEB   SITE   TITLE
The Only Time Your Site Should Certainly Be
AT THE TOP OF THE LIST
Is When You Search For YOUR WEB SITE TITLE

Once you see how your site is displayed you know
which data is used from your site and
displayed for a 'searcher' to see.
............. REMEMBER ............
You may have to REREGISTER your site
EVERY TWO to THREE MONTHS
With SOME Search Engines !

It is wise to learn how to do it yourself !

SPECIAL  INTEREST  AND  SELECTIVE  SEARCH  ENGINES
Most commercial web sites have a somewhat selective market and if you can find one or more engines that deal exclusively with your product or service then you should concentrate on getting your site registered with them. The best way to find these selective listings is to use other search engines and/or use the newsgroups. The newsgroups, by their nature, are selective in the subject matter they deal with and offer good sources of information but have a good virus software program running when you deal with them. More viruses are in the newsgroups than anywhere else on the internet.

SPECIAL  TIPS  FOR  HIGH  TRAFFIC
Some Search Engines look for more details than others. Here is the list of the basic elements and the extra components that are sometimes looked for :
  • Relevant   PAGE   TITLE
  • Relevant   PAGE   FILE   NAMES

  • Meta Tags   = DESCRIPTION   and   KEYWORDS

  • Relevant   ALT   TAG   TEXT   (for image files)
  • Relevant   TITLE   TAG   TEXT   (for text and image links)
  • Relevant   HEADLINE   TAG   TEXT
  • Relevant   IMAGE   FILE   NAMES

  • Repetitive   - KEYWORDS   IN   THE   TEXT   BODY
EXPLANATIONS :

1)   PAGE   TITLE -
This is the MOST important text. It should be simple - 8 to 10 words or less - and should state the main offerings of your service or product. This is the basis for all that follows. The TITLE can usually be seen at the very top of the browser screen. When a search engine displays the information for your web site - this is usually the very first thing shown.

2)   PAGE   FILE   NAME -
This has minor importance in search engine placement. Page file names that are similar to keywords can sometimes place you "slightly" higher in the search engine placement. However, sometimes it is too difficult to change page file names due to the complex nature of certain web sites. Odd or cryptic file names should NOT be considered a significant detriment to search engine placement.

3)   META   TAGS -
DESCRIPTION  and  KEYWORDS -
These are not visible on web pages. They are "hidden" in the HTML source code(SOURCE) of the page. They are located in the HEAD of the SOURCE.

The DESCRIPTION is a sentence or two - 25 words or less is best. Expand on the TITLE using the primary keywords or phrases.

Most Search Engines will display your TITLE and DESCRIPTION when your site comes up in a search list so they should be as relevant and precise as possible.

The KEYWORDS are all the words and phrases that are unique to your web site. Some MAY ALREADY BE DISPLAYED IN THE TITLE AND DESCRIPTION. Feel free to add as many relevant keywords or phrases as you wish but TRY TO KEEP THEM TO A MINIMUM. These are the "catch all" words - anything that directly relates to your web site should be inserted in the keywords. Next to Title and Description - Keywords are very important in your search engine placement.

4)   ALT   TAGS -
When a cursor is held over an IMAGE a small box with text usually appears. This small box contains the ALT TAG for that particular IMAGE. There is no limit of how much you can enter in the ALT tag but brevity is usually preferred. Ideally the ALT tag should be a precise description of the IMAGE itself but that is not always the case. You may put anything you wish in the ALT tags but the more KEYWORDS or PHRASES that you can use the better your placement will be. This is of secondary importance in search engine placement BUT it is a significant factor. Having NO ALT tags can be done but your placement will be reduced "somewhat" because of it.

5)   TITLE   TAGS - ( Not to be confused with PAGE TITLE )
When a cursor is held over an IMAGE or TEXT LINK a small box with text may appear. This small box contains the TITLE TAG for some browsers. Most browsers will display the ALT tag but some show only the TITLE tag. In the absense of the ALT tag a browser may show the TITLE tag. There is no limit of how much you can enter in the TITLE tag but brevity is usually preferred. Ideally the TITLE tag should be identical to the ALT tag of the same image or link. Having NO TITLE tags can be done without much loss of search engine ranking.

6)   HEADLINE   TAG   TEXT -
<H1> , <H2> etc.    are called Headline tags. Some search engines place importance on what is in these tags so inserting keywords is always prudent.

7)   IMAGE   FILE   NAMES -
Image File Names are similar to Page File Names in that they have minor importance in search engine placement. Odd or cryptic file names should NOT be considered a significant detriment to search engine placement but if image files can be named with keywords it will help "slightly" in your search engine placement.

8)   TEXT -
Repetitions of KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTION -
The main body of your web site (especially your homepage) should contain repetitions of your keywords, phrases and description. If you have a large number of keywords they must appear in text form on your pages or their relevance will be ignored by most search engines so - again - it is best to limit the number of keywords and make sure they are repeated within the main text of your homepage. REMEMBER - IMAGES that CONTAIN TEXT are NOT READ AS TEXT BY SEARCH ENGINES. So if you have a large IMAGE with lots of fancy fonts and descriptive words - they will not be seen by the search engines. You must have plain text (that can be highlighted - as individual letters - by your cursor) for search engines to read and correlate. This is a significant factor in your search engine placement and you should endeavor to insert as much text as possible (within reason).
